RECENT EVENT

The 3rd Gathering

Held on 8th October 1999, Friday at Dhaka University Computer Center

Are you a Linux user and want to share your experiences, joys and sorrows with other Linuxers? Then wait no more. We are trying to form a Linux Users Group in Bangladesh (BDLUG), an informal forum where we can meet, exchange ideas and have a gossip about Linux.

Whom are we looking for?

We are looking for you if you belong to any of these groups :
  1. You use Linux at your work or in your home.
  2. You use any other Unix.
  3. You don't use Linux currently, but you have a hackers mentality, you have a keen desire to know how things work and you are interested about Linux or any other Unix.

What will be the benefits?

Information exchange
Linux (Unix) is not only an OS, it is a large world. A system administrator knows about the admin utilities, but there is a lot to learn in TeX. A programmer knows C and other languages, but he can learn a lot about the workings of Linux from an admin. A writer knows about emacs and TeX, but there is a lot to learn in sed and awk that will help him. So, no matter in what field you are working, this group can help you.
Make friends
Linux (Unix) users are a minority (a very intelligent one of course). Everyone needs friends. What can be a better medium for making friends than a users' group where you can meet a lot of similar minded people?
Spread the use of Linux
OK, you know almost everything you wanted to know about Linux and you have lots of friends. But if you really love Linux wouldn't you like to see more people join the Linux bandwagon? As a Linux guru, isn't it your moral duty to show the masses that there is an alternate, and in most cases better way?
Increase Linux awareness in business
More and more businesses and other organizations in our country are using computers for jobs other than word processing. Most of them are shackled in the tiny Microsoft world and most of them are using pirated softwares. Linux, with its bundled database products, a plethora of development tools and unmatched flexibility is the best platform for these businesses. We, in the BDLUG could try to educate them about the usability of Linux. This would be a great help to our country.

Major Activities

We will choose and evaluate our activities in regular meetings. For the moment, we are planning for the following:
  • A weekly, bi-weekly or monthly gathering. This will feature regular classes, workshops and discussions about applications, utilities and languages in the Linux platform.
  • A mailing list (this has been started already, see below).
  • A news letter, both in electronic and printed form.
  • Sharing software and books.

How to join

Just fill out this application form. If this link is unavailable, you can use an alternate application form. If you live outside Bangladesh, don't hesitate to join. You can participate in the mailing list and communicate over the Net.

Mailing list

We have a mailing list. If you have checked the "Subscribe to the BDLUG mailing list" option in your application form, you do not have to subscribe separately. In case you didn't, or you are not a member of BDLUG, you can subscribe to the list by sending a blank e-mail to bdlug-subscribe@egroups.com

You are welcome to join the list, even if you don't want to become a member of the BDLUG.
